A Review of Advantages of Yoga

Role Of Yoga In Personality Development

Personality: Definition

personality (the complex of all the attributes--behavioral, temperamental, emotional and mental--that characterize a unique individual) "their different reactions reflected their very different personalities"; "it is his nature to help others"
http://wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=personality

The yogic view of of personality( Bipin Joshi)

http://ezinearticles.com/?Yoga-and-Personality-Development&id=163126

"As per Yoga the human body consists of five sheaths or layers. They are:

  • Conscious physical sheath (Annayama Kosha)
  • Subconscious physical sheath (Pranamaya Kosha)
  • Mental sheath (Manomaya Kosha)
  • Intellectual Sheath (Vigyanmaya Kosha)
  • Blissful sheath (Anandamaya Kosha)

The Annamaya Kosha is related to our conscious physical deeps including
walking, talking, viewing and other such functions. These are the functions that
we perform using our physical body deliberately.

The Pranamaya Kosha deals with physical activities that we do in subconscious
state. Digestion, movement of the heart and lungs fall in this category. We
never do any deliberate efforts for these actions; still the body knows how to
perform them.

The Maniomaya Kosha deals with mind, emotions and thoughts. All our gross
thinking and emotions fall in this category.

Intellect is that faculty that decides what is good and what is bad. It is
the ability for rational thought or inference or discrimination. The Vigyanmaya
Kosha helps us to identify true from false. We can choose the correct path in
this "maya" filled world with the help of nourished Vigyanmaya Kosha.

Anandamaya Kosha or bliss is a pure state of happiness and joy which is
beyond any material pleasure. Samadhi or deep meditation gives such a joy.

The Anandamaya Kosha is the innermost sheath wrapped by other sheaths in
succession."

Physical And Psychosocial Outcomes Of Yoga

"A significant body of research exists regarding the potential role yoga practice may play in the treatment of various diseases and ailments, including heart disease, asthma, epilepsy, and carpal tunnel syndrome, among others. Although the most signficant body of literature related to yoga practice documents the cardio-pulmonary benefits associated with participation, strong evidence also documents improvements in metabolic profiles and in upper extremity strength. A small but remarkable body of evidence documents improvements in cognitive function in children and adolescents who practice yoga. There is surprisingly little written in the research literature regarding the impact of yoga practice on flexibility and balance."

Why Do Human Beings fight Among Each Other ?

We will have to ask a few basic questions to ourselves which if answered correctly will make us understand what is actually going on and what should be done to stop all this.

What Is Religion ?

There are about 25 main religions being practiced across the world today . Each one of these religions is again divided into various sects. At some isolated places of earth like Africa and the Amazon forest there are many more religions practiced by the local tribes .Each religion gives a different set of theories of origin of this world .Each religion gives a different set of paths to touch the Divine God. Each religion gives the people a certain set of rules to act within .

But a simple logic a sane person should understand that no matter what anybody says there can be one and only one Ultimate Theory to explain the origin of this world and there can be one and only one GOD…if actually there is one !!!

What Is Language ?

“A language is a dynamic set of visual, auditory, or tactile symbols of communication and the elements used to manipulate them.”-Wikipedia .

Once I was watching a documentary on language and I would like to restate what I learnt from that documentary-“It has been proved by research that a language is a natural tendency of a human being “. That simply implies that if a experiment is conducted such that a group of children before having developed any sign of language is isolated , they are destined to find a way to communicate or in simple words will develop there own language.

So let it be Japanese,Chinese,Spanish or let it be Marathi,Tamil,Kannada,Malyalam,Hindi,English……Language is just a way of expressing your ideas and no language should be considered to be superior or to be inferior to the other…or there should not be a sense of pride or a sense of anguish to speak a particular language. If you know the language speak it out and if you don’t know the language try to learn it and then speak it out and share your ideas with the society. Why does anybody wants to fight for language !!!

Now after having witnessed the world war 1 and world war 2 and other everyday terrorist attacks I think its finally the time that we should sit and contemplate that something is potentially wrong with the human nature .We ourselves classify things and we ourselves divide things and then we actually become a part of those hypothetical divisions and start having inter-hypothetical-division fights . Well now-a-days I think the hypothetical divides of the religion are getting blunted gradually .I think I know what will be the new divides of humanity –Atheists,Agnostics,Scientlogists,Budhists, Scientifics and non-Scientifics, knowledgeable and less knowledgeable , IQ above 150 , IQ from 100-150 and IQ below 100

There are many other questions which Humanity should answer itself before carrying on with the business of being the Humanity.

BEST OF YOGA : PRANAYAMA

Pranayama (Sanskrit: prāṇāyāma) is a Sanskrit word meaning "lengthening of the prana or breath". The word is composed of two Sanskrit words, Prāna, life force, or vital energy, particularly, the breath, and "āyāma", to lengthen or extend .(From Wikipedia)

Bhagavad Gita

Pranayama is mentioned in verse 4.29 of the Bhagavat Gita.

Quotes

Prana is a subtle invisible force. It is the life-force that pervades the body. It is the factor that connects the body and the mind, because it is connected on one side with the body and on the other side with the mind. It is the connecting link between the body and the mind. The body and the mind have no direct connection. They are connected through Prana only and this Prana is different from the breathing you have in your physical body.
– Swami Chidananda Saraswati

Shilpa Shetty - Pranayam Breathing (Shilpa's Yoga) - The funniest videos clips are here

Yoga works primarily with the energy in the body, through the science of pranayama, or energy-control. Prana means also ‘breath.’ Yoga teaches how, through breath-control, to still the mind and attain higher states of awareness. The higher teachings of yoga take one beyond techniques, and show the yogi, or yoga practitioner, how to direct his concentration in such a way as not only to harmonize human with divine consciousness, but to merge his consciousness in the Infinite.
– Paramahansa Yogananda

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

Pranayama is the fourth 'limb' of the eight limbs of Raja Yoga mentioned in verse 2.29 in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.Patanjali discusses his specific approach to pranayama in verses 2.49 through 2.51, and devotes verses 2.52 and 2.53 to explaining the benefits of the practice.Patanjali refers to pranayama as the control of life force that comes as a result of practicing the various breathing techniques, rather than the numerous breathing exercises themselves.
Many yoga teachers advise that pranayama should be part of an overall practice that includes the other limbs of Patanjali's Raja Yoga teachings, especially Yama, Niyama, and Asana.

Medical claims(From Wikipedia)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pranayama

Several researchers have reported that pranayama techniques are beneficial in treating a range of stress related disorders, improving autonomic functions, relieving symptoms of asthma, and reducing signs of oxidative stress. Practitioners report that the practice of pranayama develops a steady mind, strong will-power, and sound judgement, and also claim that sustained pranayama practice extends life and enhances perception.

Autonomic responses to breath holding and its variations following pranayama.
Bhargava R, Gogate MG, Mascarenhas JF.
Department of Physiology, Goa Medical College, Bombolim.

Autonomic responses to breath holding were studied in twenty healthy young men. Breath was held at different phases of respiration and parameters recorded were Breath holding time, heart rate systolic and diastolic blood pressure and galvanic skin resistance (GSR). After taking initial recordings all the subjects practised Nadi-Shodhana Pranayama for a period of 4 weeks. At the end of 4 weeks same parameters were again recorded and the results compared. Baseline heart rate and blood pressure (systolic and diastolic) showed a rendency to decrease and both these autonomic parameters were significantly decreased at breaking point after pranayamic breathing. Although the GSR was recorded in all subjects the observations made were not conclusive. Thus pranayama breathing exercises appear to alter autonomic responses to breath holding probably by increasing vagal tone and decreasing sympathetic discharges.
